21st century – the era of inclusivity.

“Loneliness increases our risk of heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Statistically, it’s as bad for our health as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. It’s also an economic crisis, costing us billions annually, and a political crisis, fuelling divisiveness and extremism,” as described in the brilliant and thought provoking book ‘The Lonely Century’ by Noreena Hertz.

But what exactly is loneliness? Loneliness is more than just physical solitude, it’s a deep emotional state of feeling isolated and disconnected from others. It’s that longing for meaningful social connections and a sense of fulfilment in our interactions. And anyone can experience loneliness, regardless of their circumstances or the number of people around them.

In a world increasingly connected by technology, it’s important that we remember to foster genuine connections in both our real and virtual lives. We have the power to contribute to a better, more inclusive world by simple acts of kindness. A smile, a willingness to listen to diverse perspectives, sharing courageous caring messages, and embracing inclusiveness all make a small but significant difference.

An inclusive work environment is crucial in fostering a sense of belonging. When individuals feel valued, respected, and included at their workplace, it creates a positive atmosphere where collaboration, creativity, and productivity thrive. As leaders and colleagues, we have a responsibility to lead by example and create a work environment where everyone feels empowered to bring their whole selves and contribute to the collective success.

Together, we have the power to transform our century to be ‘The inclusive century’. Let’s start today by lighting up someone’s day and reminding them that this world is full of friends waiting to be discovered.

Lead with curiosity.
